Greater Syria $50 While for many years scholars and journalists have focused on the more obvious manifestations of political life in the Middle East, one major theme has been consistently neglected. This is Pan-Syrian nationalism–the dream of creating a Greater Syria out of an area now governed by Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, and Turkey. Though not nearly as well known as Arab or Palestinian nationalism and hardly studied in depth, Pan-Syrianism has had a profound effect on Middle Eastern politics since the end of World War I. In Greater Syria, the noted Middle East scholar Daniel Pipes provides the first comprehensive account of this intriguing, important, and little understood ideology. |

A Smattering Of Thanksgiving Fowl Facts
While you probably always remember eating delicious Thanksgiving turkey on Thanksgiving Day, historians note that the turkey was not the featured food on the original Thanksgiving Day menu. The story goes that the Pilgrims had a very harsh time for a few years after they landed.
It only was in 1621 when the Pilgrims experienced success with a blessed harvest. Pilgrims and Indian guests alike ate a wide variety of food during a three-day celebration honoring the Pilgrims’ first super harvest. We know this included turkey because Governor Bradford wrote they took many wild turkeys from the storage of fowl. It’s a pretty good bet that many other foods—such as seafood, venison, and a multiple of varieties of birds—also were served.
What could have been on the initial Thanksgiving Day menu:
- Lobster and clams
- Indian corn
- Duck
Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie, you ask?! Necessary ingredients to make pumpkin pie such as spices, sugar, and ovens were not available at the time!
President Lincoln declared Thanksgiving an official holiday in 1863. Previously, George Washington declared it to be a holiday. It wasn’t until about the mid-1850s before the American public truly got behind the Thanksgiving celebration . It wasn’t until after the 1850s that the turkey became a solid part of the Thanksgiving tradition.
In contrast to food-consumption similarities, the core differences between Thanksgiving and Christmas are significant. God is the targeted recipient of thanks expressed at Thanksgiving for blessings received during the previous year. More religious-based than Thanksgiving, Christmas is geared toward Christianity.
The sale of turkeys during the Thanksgiving holiday season equates to business in a large way. In the U.S. alone, nearly five billion pounds of turkey are eaten during Thanksgiving and Christmas {This adds up to nearly $8 billion|In dollars and cents, Americans spend about $8 billion each Thanksgiving and Christmas to eat turkey. In the last few decades, the Thanksgiving turkey itself has become bigger and bigger. This is due to genetic engineering and certain breeding practices that continually mate larger and larger turkeys together in the hopes their offspring will be even bigger.
